Alternate English title: Fantômas: The Dead Man Who Killed
Fantômas is the first famous film criminal mastermind. He uses
disguises, gentleman's charm, and vicious ruthlessness to terrorize
Paris. This episode is adapted from the third Fantômas novel - a translated edition is here.
In the first episode he robs a princess, and then is suspected of involvement in the disappearance of a Lord Beltham.
the second episode, Fantômas fiercely battles his steadfast foe Inspector Juve, setting up a train disaster along the way.
In this episode Fandor, the journalist who is Inspector Juve's devoted young sidekick, steps into the limelight (while both Fantômas and Juve become less prominent), attempting to crack the mystery of crimes apparently committed by a dead man. In Les Vampires, director Louis Feuillade's follow-up to the Fantômas series, he created a protagonist much like the Fandor shown here: a sleuthing journalist determined to track down an elusive master criminal. This episode also has a flavor of what would later be called "police procedural" films, with emphasis on "scientific policing", specifically the anthropometry system of the French police officer Alphonse Bertillon - inventor of the "mug shot".
Fantômas films are often thought of as a serial, but they are really
long installments in a series, somewhat like our Bond and Bourne
franchises. A “feature” film at the period might run fifty to
seventy-five minutes. As with our franchises, there are recurring
characters. The films pit police inspector Juve and the journalist
Fandor against Fantômas and his accomplices, notably the treacherous but
passionate Lady Beltham.
